Why people love it
Old man cactus looks like a little column wearing a shaggy white coat. The “hair” is really thin, flexible spines. It shades the cactus from strong sun. Underneath are sharp yellow spines, so it is not as soft as it looks.
Care in a nutshell
- Full sun. It needs lots of direct light to stay upright and keep its hair bright white.
- Water sparingly. Soak the soil, then let it dry out completely. Too much water is the usual way to lose one.
- Give it a dry winter rest. Keep it cool and bright, and water very little until spring.
- Be patient. It grows only a little each year.
See the cacti guide for more on desert cacti, including how to handle spiny plants.
Watch out for
- A soft, dark base means rot from too much water.
- Dusty or dirty hair can be cleaned with a gentle stream of water or a soft brush. Let it dry quickly in sun and good airflow.
- Thin, pale new growth at the top means it needs more light.
Fun fact: In the wild, old man cactus can grow into a column many feet tall, but it takes decades to get there.
