About
A field guide anyone can use
Succulents are many people’s first plants. Good advice about them should be easy to find, easy to read, and easy to trust.
Why we exist
Most succulent advice online is buried in ads, padded with filler, or contradicts itself. Then a beloved plant turns to mush, and its owner decides they have a “black thumb”.
We think nearly everyone can grow succulents well once they understand a few simple ideas: light, drainage, and patience. succulents.info explains those ideas clearly, with practical steps and no jargon. When we do need a technical word, we explain it in the glossary.
What’s next
We’re growing the plant library and planning a small online nursery. Every plant will come with the same clear care information you find here. See what’s planned.
Accessibility statement
Gardening is for everyone, so this site is built for everyone. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, and level AAA wherever we can.
What we’ve done
- High contrast throughout. All text meets the WCAG AAA contrast ratio of at least 7:1, in both light and dark mode.
- A typeface designed for low vision. Body text is set in Atkinson Hyperlegible Next, created by the Braille Institute to make letters easier to tell apart.
- You control the display. Use the Display button at the top of every page to choose light or dark colors, larger text, and reduced motion. Your browser’s own zoom and text-size settings work too.
- Never color alone. Pet safety, problem severity, and other status information always have a text label, not just a color.
- Keyboard and screen reader friendly. A “skip to main content” link, clear headings and landmarks, a large visible focus indicator, and descriptive link text.
- Plain language. Short sentences, step-by-step lists, and explained jargon.
- Works without JavaScript. Interactive extras like the watering helper and plant filters are bonuses; all the information is available without them.
- One consistent design system. Every button, form control, and callout comes from Rosette, our component library, so the accessible patterns are the same on every page. Our color contrast is checked automatically on every change.
- Mobile first. Every page works on small screens and at up to 400% zoom without sideways scrolling.
